Mađerka and Mađerkin Breg
Back in 1940, Emilija Krauthaker, a famous Hungarian ballerina, moved to this area for love, following her husband, a Hungarian soldier.
The story behind the name Mađerkin breg
Mađerkin Breg (Cro. Mađerka’s Hill) is 341 m high, which is only three and a half meters lower than the highest peak of Međimurje.
The story behind its name is a special one indeed. Back in 1940, Emilija Krauthaker, a famous Hungarian ballerina, moved to this area for love, following her husband, a Hungarian soldier. When she arrived here, she wanted to be addressed as Milostiva (Cro. lady).
Following the death of her husband, she lived modestly. She was known for having many hens, each with its own name. She would write the names of the hens that laid them on the eggs and take them to the store in Štrigova, where she would sell them.
When asked about her sustenance, she would answer that she depended on those eggs, but was nourished by the beauty of nature all around.
